"Gah!"
Argus moved out of the way as a Shadow Heartless lunged at him, flailing at him wildly with its sharp claws, aiming to shred him to ribbons. "Damn, that thing almost killed me!" A single bead of sweat dripped down his forehead as he held Starlight out in a defensive stance. It was rough and unpracticed. He clearly wasn't a fighter by trade. There were six Shadows laid out before him. He had never faced this many Heartless before and it was proving to be a challenge.
'Come on, grow a backbone!' The boy steeled himself, narrowing his eyes at the monsters before him. "Bring it on!" He charged at the group of little black creatures, swinging his keyblade wildly at them. He struck one in the head as it lunged for him again, sending it falling to the ground. A second Shadow tried to attack him from behind, but Argus had been keeping an eye on it and he saw it coming, so he moved aside and smacked his keyblade into its side, stunning it just long enough for him to finish the first Shadow with a savage blow to its back that cleaved it in two.
The creature shrieked in pain before exploding into a black smoke-like substance, a tiny little heart floating up into the sky before vanishing. He heard that people with keyblades could release hearts held captive by the darkness when they defeat Heartless, so he figured that must have been what it was all about. Argus turned to the remaining five Heartless, holding his keyblade out as he gripped it with both hands. "Stay back! I know how to use this!" That was only half true.
He knew how to flail wildly and sometimes kill things, but that was about it. His skill had certainly grown in these past few weeks, but he was far from being a seasoned warrior. Even a slightly braised warrior. He was the perfect example of a greenhorn.

feel the light shining in the dark of the night | A sigh escaped from Riku at the fairly pathetic sight in front of him. He had known that most of the new recruits for the different Unions would be new to the idea of fighting, but what he was seeing wasn't new. It was just... sad.
Maybe he was being biased. No, scratch that-- he was being biased. But it wasn't like Riku had ever received any formal training. He had just picked up a wooden sword to use for fun when he had been a kid, and then had taken to using a sword made from the power of his heart when he had only been fifteen. A good three years younger than the kid before him, and he hadn't run screaming from the heartless. He had met them head on and had thrown himself whole-heartedly into battle.
So maybe he was being a bit harsh, but. Pathetic..
Way To The Dawn snapped into appearance before Riku tossed it. The motion was so gentle and casual, it seemed almost like he barely put any effort into it -- and yet the heartless that had been around Argus were sliced open and vanished in a puff of smoke, their hearts rising up into the air as they did.
"If you're going to try to train outside of the actual training grounds-" Referring to the Land of Departure. "Then you should probably be prepared to actually fight heartless." His frown was audible in his tone as Riku stepped over towards Argus, keyblade vanishing as he propped one hand up on his hip.

Argus steeled himself against his foes, waiting for them to strike. The Shadows creeped through the flowers, encroaching further and further on his personal space. With a hiss, the lead Shadow lunged at the young Keyblade wielder... but it never made it to its target. Argus moved to counter, but Riku's Way to the Dawn cut him off, slaying the all of the Heartless threatening him in one fell swoop. Argus couldn't believe it. It was like they were nothing to this guy. Who was this guy anyway? The teen turned to face his rescuer, noticing that it was Master Riku. He had never spoken to the guy personally before, but he had seen him around. Even heard that they were both from the Islands. Riku was slightly familiar to him. Maybe he was part of that group of kids that would play on that island off of the mainland.
Argus was always more interested in his games and comic books than playing pretend like the other kids. Not to mention he had a full time job taking care of his baby sister, Lily. "Uh, hey Master Riku. Thanks for--" Then came the criticism. Argus averted his gaze from the Master, ashamed. He sullenly flicked his wrist, Starlight vanishing in a brilliant gleam of light. "I-I just thought..."
'Grow a backbone!'
There it was again. That voice in the back of his mind. Argus considered it his inner adult. The butterfly in the cocoon as it were. It always said the same thing, but Argus never took its advice for more than a moment. He clenched his fists and looked at Riku in defiance. "I already killed two of 'em! I'm not a weakling, you know." That was true. Physically, he wasn't weak. Just... unpracticed. Unskilled. Argus's expression softened. "I wasn't getting any better there. I... needed to go out in the wider world. The last time I got stronger, it was when I left home." His expression grew defiant once again. Maybe he was just trying to act cool in front of an actual fighter. "If you wanna criticize me, why not give me some actually useful advice while you're at it." While his words indicated he was mad, his tone was one of interest. Like he actually wanted some advice.

feel the light shining in the dark of the night | He found himself eyeing the other male coolly for a moment. When it had come to deciding what Union Riku would be representing, it hadn't really been a clear cut choice-- his strength had seemed a perfect fit for Lunar, but he had the endurance for Solaris. What had cinched it had been the similarities between himself and Luna. Honestly, he felt like he might have been one of the few that could stare up at her masked-covered eyes without any hesitation or fear. Not being able to see what was beneath was a familiar experience for him, and the almost defiance he had shown her had amused the woman.
And much like her, he was often a bit... cold. It wasn't entirely something that Riku meant. It just seemed... easier? Simpler? Trying to temper your words was complicated and exhausting, and it was easier to just say what he was thinking.
"You weren't getting any better at the place with Keyblade Masters and three Union Leaders who are probably stronger than all of us combined." There was only a slight edge of disbelief to his tone. It was mostly amusement more than anything else. If Riku had to place a guess, it would be that Argus had been afraid to actually ask for help from anyone, and that had been what had resulted in him going offworld to train. It was nothing more than an unconfirmed thought, but it seemed to fit with the way the other acted.
A silver brow arched before Riku shrugged. "I'll have to see just where you are first." He tapped at his shoe with the edge of his keyblade before nodding.
"Attack me."

Riku's assumption was correct. Argus was so used to doing everything on his own. Taking care of himself, the house, his baby sister... after so long doing everything on his own without help from anyone, it came to be something he expected; being alone. It took quite a bit of courage to ask Riku for advice even in the way that he did. Argus expected Riku to maybe dismiss him once he asked for advice, but to his surprise, the Keyblade Master invited him to attack so he could see where he was skill-wise. It made sense. Didn't want to give him advice that would go over his head or have it be something he already knew. "Right. Attack you." Argus took a deep breath and called Starlight to his hand again. The teen examined Riku's stance... if you could even call it that. He just seemed to be standing around casually. Riku seemed really confident in his ability. Argus hoped he could be half that confident one of these days. 'Okay. I got this.'
The newbie key-bearer first tried to find his stance. He eventually settled on something offensive. At least, he thought it was offensive. His stance was spread, keyblade held out with both hands, the weapon almost perfectly even with the center of his body. "Hey, Master." He had a perfect idea in mind. "Freeze!" He spun his key around, slashing in Riku's direction. A chilling blast of ice crystals flew from the tip of his blade and towards Riku. 'Go go go!' Argus took off, charging in Riku's direction. Hopefully, the Blizzard spell served well as a distraction. He didn't expect Riku to just stand there and take it, so he would keep an eye on the Keyblade Master as he made his assault. Once he got within striking distance of Riku, he would crouch low-- stumbling slightly as he did so-- and aim a haphazard slash at Riku's kneecaps. He would then follow up with a sloppy upwards slash at Riku's torso, then a kick towards the Master's stomach.
"W-Woah!" He tried to hop back on one leg after the kick, having nearly lost his balance and fallen. The teen was silently grateful he didn't though. That would have been embarrassing. Hopefully this would be even the smallest bit effective. He didn't want to fail so horribly in front of someone with the rank of Master. He at least wanted to impress him a little bit, daunting though the task seemed. Even though Riku just wanted to see his level of skill, to Argus, this was a little more personal. He always knew deep down that he wasn't a fighter. But now he was trying to be and he wanted to prove to Riku that he was stronger than he looked. He could do this. He could go the distance.

feel the light shining in the dark of the night | Being too tense rarely did anything good in battle. It made you jumpy and on edge, flinching and reacting to everything. Riku had learned a long time ago to let go of his anxiety before moving onto the battlefield, whether it was just training or actually going up against heartless. Just letting out a deep breath and watching your opponent would give you an edge you would lose by trying to be 'on guard'.
Riku dodged to the side, flipping himself easing and twisting around so that he landed to face Argus, keyblade still drawn. The few slashes aimed at him were easily parried, and the kick was blocked with the bar of his keyblade before the Master pushed back, further shoving the other off balance. It would have been the perfect moment to use to retaliate with an attack of his own, but that wasn't the purpose of this training exercise.
"Attacks work better when you don't wind up telegraphing your intentions before you move." He lifted Way to the Dawn and made a gesture, as if to tap against the other male's side. "Announcing your spell made it easy to know I had to dodge it, and your body tenses and shifts making it obvious how you're going to move before you do it."
He stood straight, lips pressed in a slight frown. "What's your combat training before this?"

"Tsk" Argus frowned when his assault proved less than effective, Riku dodging his Blizzard spell and effortlessly parrying away his blows. He took a few steps back and got into a ready stance again, but Riku spoke to him, actually offering advice this time. He was still gruff and a little bit of an asshole about it, but Argus could respect his way of teaching. 'So, I guess I better not scream the names of my spells then. Or maybe... scream the wrong spell names? Maybe mix it up a bit?' Argus filed that away in his mental notes for later.
Riku then asked the teen a question. One about his combat experience. He was almost too embarrassed to answer. The most accurate answer to that question would be "none," but he didn't want to leave it at that when it came to someone like Riku. He was a Keyblade Master. His combat experience must make Argus's look like the greenest of greenhorns in comparison. Though, little did Argus know, Riku's combat experience in general was greater than his own, even before he became a wielder of the Keyblade.
Before he set foot off of his world, even. After a nervous chuckle, the young Keyblade wielder gave Riku an answer. "Uh... I played a lot of Knights of Baelorn in my time." He let out another nervous chuckle to ease the tension after his joke about his favorite RPG. 'Oh god that was stupid. Please don't think i'm stupid.'

feel the light shining in the dark of the night | He found himself cracking a slight smile at the thought of Argus running into battle and just screaming out the names of every spell except for the one he was planning on using. It was a thoroughly entertaining idea with just a few downsides.
"You would still be giving away your position, though I suppose the confusion you could cause might be worth it." No reason to be a 'Negative Nancy' and completely shoot the idea down when there were some good points about it. "The real question would be if you would be able to keep everything straight even while saying a different spell. You might wind up confusing yourself and casting fire when you meant to cast blizzard."
Riku himself preferred to just go for the silent method, getting his mouth shut as he cast his spell or attacked. It didn't benefit him from yelling things off and tended to unnerve people when he was just unceasingly silent, which gave him two good reasons to hold his tongue.
A slow blink in response to Argus' final statement. "Knights of Baelorn? I..." There was something slightly familiar about that name that was chewing on the back of his thoughts. "I've heard of that before. Is that a military group?"

Argus nodded at Riku's advice. If he did go through with that strategy, he would have to be careful not to cast the wrong spell. Might end up immolating an ally when he meant to freeze an enemy. That wouldn't be good at all. "Okay. Thanks, Master Riku. I'll keep that in mind." He filed that knowledge away for later, also making a mental note to train on this strategy to see just how effective it would be in battle. He would also have to try just keeping his mouth shut. That was a method that was tried and true by Riku, so it would be a great strategy to fall back on.
Then Riku responded to his joke about how his combat experience was composed of nothing but playing Knights of Baelorn. He had put in over a thousand hours on that game, almost all of it on his level 147 Battlemaster. If those hours translated into actual combat experience, Argus would have been a swordsman with enviable and peerless skill. If only. When Riku asked if that was a military group, the young Keyblade wielder chuckled a bit. "Oh, no, no. It's an online game my friends and I played a lot of. You play a guy who died during a battle against the Dark Ones, who are like these ancient god-like beings, but the gods bring you back to assist in the fight and give you some cool powers."
Argus chuckled nervously. "It was pretty popular among us kids at school. You're from the islands too, right? We look like we're about the same age, too, so you might've heard it talked about in the halls." He secretly hoped that Riku played it, too, so that they could find some common ground. It seemed like the Keyblade Master was starting to loosen up at this point, so that definitely helped Argus's nerves too.

feel the light shining in the dark of the night | Riku pressed his lips together tightly before looking down. "I'm from the islands, but I didn't go to the same school that most of the others did." Perhaps it was an unfair assumption to guess that Argus hadn't gone to the same private school that Riku had attended, but he couldn't recall seeing him there. Things were taken a bit more seriously there then they had been on the island public schools, much to Riku's own displeasure. It would have been nice to be able to relax and have fun in class with Sora and Kairi, or really anyone else, but...
C'est le vie.
"I started training when I was a kid. Didn't really call it training at first since it was just playing around with Sora, but starting in elementary school I started to actually take fencing lessons. I..." Wanted to? No, had to be the best. Had to be better than Sora. It wasn't... something he was exactly proud of, even if it did give him an edge now.
It wasn't something he really wanted to think about, either way. With a small shake of his head Riku pressed forward with the conversation. "So a video game. Did it teach you anything...? I mean, like, combat strategies, stealth, anything like that?" He had never been too into games but had played with Sora. It was enough for Riku to know that, even if Argus hadn't been able to learn any sort of physical skills from the games, he might have learned something else.

"Oh, you went to a private school or something? That's cool. Probably got a better education than I did." Argus chuckled. "My parents couldn't really afford to send me to a private school, so I just went to a public one." He smiled. "Well, it's a shame we didn't meet sooner. I think we could have been pretty good friends." Then Riku briefly told him about his own history of combat, playing around with his friends and then taking on fencing lessons when he was older. If Argus knew what he would end up doing in his later life, he might have taken on a more proactive approach to learning combat. That would have certainly been useful right about now.
When Riku asked Argus if his countless hours on Knights of Baelorn yielded any concrete results, the teen thought for a moment. After a few seconds, he responded. "Yeah, now that I think about it, I learned quite a bit. I led a raiding party for my guild. It takes a decent amount of strategical thinking to do that effectively. You gotta lead, like, twenty people against a bunch of monsters. I did some Domination too. That's basically the same thing, but you fight against other players to capture different points. So yeah, I guess I did learn some useful things."
Argus stretched briefly before continuing. "Aside from tactics, I suppose I learned about managing people too." He grinned at Riku. "So, fencing, eh? That's interesting. Where'd you take classes?"
